कभी लगातार प्रयोगों से बॉलीवुड सिनेमा को एक नया रास्ता दिखाने वाले राम गोपाल वर्मा ने शायद अब अपने लिए दो सुरक्षित जोन तलाश लिए हैं, अंडरवर्ल्ड और हॉरर। लंबे समय से इन्हीं दो विषयों को बदल-बदल कर प्रस्तुत करने वाले रामू इस बार फूंक लेकर आए हैं।
वैसे यह बाकी हॉरर फिल्मों से अलग सी दिखती है। यह रामू की खूबी है कि वे तकनीकी कारीगरी से एक ही विषय को दो बार प्रस्तुत कर देते हैं। खास तौर पर भूत में रात की कहानी को रिपीट करने का उन्होंने बड़े ही गर्व के साथ दावा किया था। इस दावे के साथ ही वे कहानी पर अपनी निर्भरता को कम करते जाते हैं। रात फ्लाप थी और भूत एक हिट फिल्म। उनका मानना है कि सिर्फ कहानी कहने का तरीका अहम होता है, कहानी नहीं…
शायद बाद में रामू को हिन्दी सिनेमा के एक बेहतरीन कॉपीकैट के रूप में ही याद किया जाएगा। रामू मौलिक होने का भ्रम रचते हैं। मौजूदा हॉरर फिल्मों के बीच फूंक को एक मौलिक प्रयास के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। यह फिल्म काला जादू, टोने और टोटके जैसी भारतीय मानस में रचे-बसे भय को अपना आधार बनाती है। इस लिहाज से निःसंदेह रामू ने एक दिलचस्प हॉरर फिल्म तैयार की है। इसे ज्यादा विश्वसनीय बनाने के लिए उन्होंने इस फिल्म में किसी जाने-माने चेहरे को नहीं लिया है जबकि भूत में सितारों का जमावड़ा लगा दिया था।
अगर राज खोसला के काम को छोड़ दिया जाए तो भारत में अच्छी हॉरर फिल्में नहीं के बराबर बनी हैं। आम तौर पर हॉरर फिल्में हॉलीवुड की घटिया नकल होती हैं। रामू भी इसके अपवाद नहीं हैं। वहीं पश्चिम में रोमान पोलांस्की जैसे गंभीर निर्देशक ने निर्देशक ने रोजमेरीज बेबी जैसी हॉरर फिल्म बनाई और उसमें ईसाई मिथकों का इस्तेमाल किया। पश्चिम में हॉरर को हमेशा लोगों को मन में छिपे भय, मिथक तथा किंवंदंतियों से जोड़ कर देखा गया है। तभी द एक्जोरसिस्ट, फ्राइडे द थर्टींथ और द ओमेन जैसी फिल्मों की परिकल्पना संभव हुई। द ओमेन में तो पटकथा की बुनावट इतनी सघन है कि दर्शक खुद उन मिथकों में खोते जाते हैं। शायद फूंक में द एक्जोरसिस्ट की छाया देखी जा सकेगी। वे इसे भारतीय परिवेश और जादू-टोने की किंवदंतियों के साथ प्रस्तुत करेंगे। लेकिन अगर गौर करें तो सन 1980 में रिलीज कस्तूरी और उसी साल आई निर्देशक द्वय अरुणा राजे और विकास देसाई (जो पति-पत्नी थे) की गहराई भी इसी थीम को गंभीर तरीके से उठाती है।
ये दोनों फिल्में सत्तर के दशक में चले समानांतर सिनेमा आंदोलन की शैली मे इस विषय का निर्वाह करती हैं। गहराई दरअसल अनंत नाग के अभिनय और पद्मिनी कोल्हापुरे के न्यूड सीन के कारण याद की जाएगी। हालांकि निर्देशक द्वय की गंभीरता और ईमानदारी पर कोई शक नहीं किया जा सकता। यह अपने समय की खासी चर्चित फिल्म थी, जिसे आलोचकों की सरहाना और व्यावसायिक सफलता दोनों ही मिली। गहराई जैसी फिल्म का निर्माण 26-27 साल बाद भी एक साहसिक कार्य माना जाएगा। वहीं कस्तूरी एक भय का वातावरण रचती है। धीरे-धीरे आप खुद जंगल के पास बसे एक गांव में आदिवासियों के वहम का शिकार होते जाते हैं। फूंक इन दोनों फिल्मों की विषय वस्तु को छू भी पाएगी इसमें संदेह है। दोनों ही फिल्में वैज्ञानिक चिंतन और आस्था के बीच सवाल खड़े करती हैं। यह फिल्में दरअसल नागर सभ्यता में जी रहे इनसान की उस सामूहिक अवचेतना को टटोलती हैं जिसके जेहन में आज भी भय और दुश्चिंताएं घर किए हुए हैं।
हॉलीवुड में सालों पहले द एंटिटी नाम की फिल्म भी सभ्य इनसान की इस दुविधा को बेहद सशक्त तरीके से उठाती है। इन दोनों फिल्मों के एक साल बाद सन् 1981रिलीज यह फिल्म एक सच्ची कहानी पर आधारित है जिसमें एक औरत को कोई अदृश्य ताकत प्रताड़ित करती है और उससे बलात्कार करती है। निर्देशक की खूबी है कि उसने हमारे तार्किक मन और भय को एक तार्किक बहस में तब्दील कर दिया। मध्य तक पहुंचते हुए यह फिल्म सिर्फ एक डरावनी कहानी नहीं बल्कि अनजानी शक्तियों के अस्तित्व पर छिड़ी एक बड़ी बहस से जुड़ जाती है। हालांकि फिल्म बिना किसी समाधान के खत्म हो जाती है,मगर हमारे मन में बहुत से सवालों को छोड़ती हुई।
भारत में हॉरर या भय कभी सिनेमा में गंभीरता से लिया जाने वाला विषय नहीं रहा। अगर यादगार हॉरर-सस्पेंस फिल्मों की बात करें तो श्याम-श्वेत फिल्मों के दौर की महल, वो कौन थी और संगदिल जैसी फिल्मों को याद किया जा सकता है। कमाल अमरोही की फिल्म महल को शायद इस फिल्मों के बीच एक मील के पत्थर की तरह खड़ी है। इस फिल्म को विश्व सिनेमा की द कैबिनेट आफ डाक्टर कैलीगरी जैसी फिल्मों के बीच खड़ा करना मुनासिब होगा। गहरे मनोवैज्ञानिक संदर्भ, शाट्स लेने की सर्वथा नई शैली, अवसाद से भरे मधुर गीत-संगीत ने इसे उच्च कोटि की फिल्मों में लाकर खड़ा कर दिया।

यही बात 1964 में आई राज खोसला की फिल्म वो कौन थी के बारे में भी कहा जा सकता है। मगर शायद उस परंपरा को ये निर्देशक खुद भी आगे नहीं बढ़ा सके। बाद में उन्होंने इसी थीम को मेरा साया (1966) और अनीता (1967) में दुहराने की कोशिश की।
फूंक जैसी फिल्म हॉरर सिनेमा में कुछ नया जोड़ सकेगी इसमें संदेह है। शायद अभी हमें साइको, रेबेका और 39 स्टेप्स जैसी फिल्मों के लिए लंबा इंतजार करना होगा।
