हिन्दी सिनेमा ने थ्रिलर की अपनी एक दिलचस्प स्टाइल डेवलप की थी, जो अचानक खत्म हो गई। अगर गौर करें तो सत्तर-अस्सी का दशक का हिन्दी सिनेमा इन थ्रिलर फिल्मों के लिहाज से बहुत समृद्ध था। इसमें विजय आनंद, बीआर चोपड़ा और राज खोसला जैसे निर्देशकों का काफी योगदान था। इन फिल्मों की सबसे बड़ी खूबी थी- सोशल सिनेमा के ढांचे में एक कसी- घुमावदार पटकथा और शानदार अभिनय। ज्यादातर फिल्में उस फिल्म से जुड़े कलाकारों के बेहतर अभिनय के कारण याद रह जाती हैं। चुस्त संवाद, खूबसूरत लोकेशन, दिल को छूने वाला संगीत और गीत के टटके बोल। यह सब कुछ इतनी खूबसूरती से एक-दूसरे में पिरोया गया होता था कि इसके मुकाबले हाल की तकनीकी चकाचौंधी वाली थ्रिलर फिल्में बनावटी लगती हैं। आपको कुछ भी ऐसा नहीं मिलता है जिसे आप हाल से बाहर निकलने के बाद याद रख सकें।उस दौर के थ्रिलर में सबसे शानदार और क्लासिक उदाहरण तो ज्वेल थीफ का है। सिर्फ तीन फिल्में गाइड, ज्वेल थीफ और तेरे मेरे सपने विजय आनंद को हिन्दी सिनेमा के महान निर्देशकों की कतार में रखने को काफी हैं। अफसोस की बात है कि इस नजरिए से कभी उनका मूल्यांकन ही नहीं हुआ। ज्वेल थीफ फिल्म की शुरुआत ही अप्रत्याशित घटनाओं से होती है। यह फिल्म उदाहरण है कि कैसे एक निर्देशक दर्शकों के मनोविज्ञान से खेल सकता है। इसका उदाहरण सिर्फ वह लंबा पार्टी सीन है जब विनय यानी देव आनंद को शालिनी यानी कि वैजयंती माला उसका हमशक्ल अमर समझ लेती है। इस लंबे सीन में निर्देशक ने सस्पेंस बनाए रखा है। और देव के मोजे उतारने तक हम दुविधा में रहते हैं। यह पहला दृश्य ही इस बात को इतनी गहराई से हमारे दिमाग में स्टैब्लिश कर देता है कि नायक का कोई हमशक्ल है और उसका नाम अमर है।
फिल्म इतने ट्विस्ट हैं कि आप इंतजार करते रहते हैं कि अब क्या होगा… इसके अलावा यह फिल्म अशोक कुमार, देव आनंद और वैजयंती माला के बेहतरीन अभिनय के कारण भी हमेशा याद रहेगी। इस फिल्म की खूबी है थ्रिल और सस्पेंस के साथ एक खास किस्म का सेंस आफ ह्ययूमर, जो कभी-कभी आपको इब्ने सफी के क्लासिक जासूसी उपन्यासों के किरदारों की याद दिला देता है। खास तौर पर यदि आपको आसमां के नीचे, हम आज अपने पीछे… गीत का फिल्मांकन याद हो।
यह तो बात हुई हिन्दी एक क्लासिक सस्पेंस थ्रिलर की। इस दौरान तमाम ऐसी फिल्में भी आईं, जो उस समय के बाजार और सिनेमा उद्योग के रुझान को देखते हुए बहुत साहसिक कहा जाएगा। आज सिनेमा के पास वितरण का बिल्कुल नया सिस्टम है। पहले की तरह नए विषयों को हाथ में लेने पर फ्लाप होने का खतरा नहीं है। उस दौर में अपने प्रयोग को दर्शकों की स्वीकार्यता देने के लिए निर्देशकों को बेहतर कलात्मक संतुलन साधना पड़ता था। इसी संतुलन से निकली हैं राज खोसला की वो कौन थी और मेरा साया जैसी फिल्में। मैंने दोनों ही फिल्में बचपन में देखी थीं। वो कौन थी तो मेरे बिल्कुल समझ मे नहीं आई। तब मैं बहुत छोटा था मगर मुझे कब्रिस्तान के खुलते गेट, कोहरा और बुके लेकर इंतजार करता एक डरावना सा शख्स नहीं भूला। बाद में 17-18 साल का था तो यह फिल्म दोबारा रिलीज हुई और मैंने इस फिर से देखा। मैं हैरान रह गया कि राज खोसला ने जिस तरह से सस्पेंस बनाने के लिए बहुत छोटी-छोटी बातों का सहारा लिया था, वह उन्हें अपनी अवधारणा में कई बार एडगर एलन पो सरीखे लेखकों से जोड़ता है।
मुझे आज भी लगता है कि अगर एडगर एलन पो की कहानियों या फिर आस्कर वाइल्ड की द पिक्चर आफ डोरियन ग्रे या रेबेका उपन्यास के भारतीय संस्करण को फिल्माया जाए तो राज खोसला की शैली सबसे ज्यादा उन अवधारणओं के करीब बैठेगी। राज खोसला सबसे बड़ी खूबी अपने चरित्रों को पर्दे पर एक रहस्यमय किरदार में ढालने में थी। इसके लिए वे बेहद बारीक ताना-बाना बुनते थे। चरित्रों के विकास पर वे कितनी मेहनत करते थे इसका सबसे बड़ा उदाहरण उनसे जुड़े एक प्रसंग से लगाया जा सकता है। कहते हैं कि फिल्म बंबई का बाबू के एक दृश्य में सुचित्रा सेन चेहरे पर शंका का भाव लाना था। बहुत कोशिश करने पर भी सुचित्रा उस भाव को नहीं प्रकट कर पा रही थीं जो खोसला चाहते थे। आखिर में लाइटिंग के बीच धागे से एक पत्ता बांधा गया। फिल्म में सुचित्रा संवाद बोलते हुए जब आगे बढ़ती हैं तो पत्ते की परछाईं सिर्फ उनकी आंखों पर कुछ सेकेंड के लिए पड़ती है। उसकी कालिमा उनकी शंका को सीधे दर्शकों को सामने रख देती है।
अगर विषय के लिहाज से देखें तो इसी दौर में बीआर चोपड़ा ने धुंध और इत्तेफाक जैसी फिल्म बनाई। इत्तेफाक का खास तौर से जिक्र करना चाहिए, क्योंकि 1969 में रिलीज इस फिल्म में कोई गाना नहीं था और एक सिर्फ एक रात की कहानी थी। देखा जाए तो इस तरह की कुछ और फिल्में उसी दौर में आई थी। इनमें से एक देखने लायक फिल्म है 1974 में प्रदर्शिक छत्तीस घंटे। राजकुमार, सुनील दत्त, रंजीत, माला सिन्हा और डैनी के बेहतर अभिनय से सजी इस फिल्म की कहानी का रियल टाइम सिर्फ छत्तीस घंटे था। यह एक ‘होस्टेज मूवी’ थी। तीन बदमाश एक घर में जाकर छिप जाते हैं। कुछ ऐसी ही कहानी थी अमिताभ बच्चन की फिल्म 1963 की फरार में। फरार की स्टोरी लाइन भी कितनी दिलचस्प… एक फरार हत्यारा जा छिपता है एक पुलिस अफसर के घर में। घर में सिर्फ अफसर की पत्नी और उसका बेटा है। हत्यारा दोनों को बंधक बना लेता है और इसके साथ ही एक और वास्तवकिता से रु-ब-रू होता है। अफसर की पत्नी कई साल पहले उसकी प्रेमिका थी।
अमिताभ 1974 की फिल्म बेनाम को कौन भूल सकता है। इसका एक गीत आज भी नहीं भूलता मैं बेनाम हो गया… बेनाम जैसी फिल्मों की खूबी यह थी कि ये थ्रिलर के फॉरमेट में सामाजिक मुद्दों और कई अहम सवालों से टकराती थीं। बेनाम एक मौत के चश्मदीद गवाह और उसको मिलने वाली धमकियों पर है। कुछ इसी तरह की थ्रिलर थी 1973 में आई गुलजार की अचानक। एक सेना अफसर के जीवन पर बिना गानों की इस फिल्म को ‘मोस्ट थॉट प्रोवोकिंग एंटी-वार फिल्म’ भी कह सकते हैं। संजीव कुमार की 1975 में रिलीज फिल्म उलझन का जिक्र मैं पहले भी अपने ब्लाग में कर चुका हूं। एक एक ऐसे पुलिस अफसर की कहानी है कि जो एक मर्डर केस का इन्वेस्टीगेशन कर रहा है और हत्या दरअसल उसकी पत्नी ने की है… ठीक शादी वाली रात। संजीव कुमार की 1973 में आई अनामिका हास्य और संगीत में पिरोया एक दिलचस्प थ्रिलर है। मैंने इन सभी फिल्मों के साथ उनकी रिलीज का वर्ष दिया है। आप अंदाजा लगा सकते हैं कि ये एक खास टाइम पीरियड में रिलीज हुई हैं। बीच के एक दौर में थ्रिलर लगभग खत्म हो गए या बहुत खराब फिल्में आईं। हिन्दी की थ्रिलर्स को उनका पुराना गौरव दिलाने का श्रेय सच्चे अर्थों में राम गोपाल वर्मा को जाता है। हालांकि पटकथा के मामले में वे भी मात खा जाते हैं। अभी मैं इनमें से बहुत सी उन फिल्मों का जिक्र नहीं कर पाया हूं जो मैंने नहीं देखीं और काफी पॉपुलर रही हैं। मसलन संजीव कुमार की शिकार और अमिताभ की दो अनजाने और गहरी चाल।
