सत्तर के दशक में लगभग मोनोटोनस हो चुके फिल्म म्यूजिक के बीच बिड्डू ‘आप जैसा कोई…’ गीत ताजी हवा के झोंके सा लेकर आए थे. पंद्रह साल की नाज़िया की आवाज में हिन्दी म्यूजिक हिस्ट्री में पहली बार 24 ट्रैक पर रिकार्डिंग हुई. पाकिस्तान के अख़बार डॉन ने कहा, ‘वह नाज़िया ही थीं, जिसने हिन्दुस्तान और पाकिस्तान में पॉप म्यूजिक को पॉपुलर बनाया’. नाजिया के अगले अलबम इंडिया-पाकिस्तान में ही नहीं वेस्ट इंडीज, लैटिन अमेरिका और रूस के टॉप चार्ट में थे. मगर कैंसर के कारण छोटी उम्र में वह जादुई आवाज़ थम गई.नाज़िया को इंट्रोड्यूस करने वाले बिड्डू का सफ़र कम मुश्किल नहीं था. बंगलुरु में पले-बढ़े बिड्डू अप्पैया बचपन में रेडियो सिलोन के पॉप हिट्स सुनते थे. टीनएज में गिटार बजाना सीखा और बंगलुरु के क्लबों और पब्स में गाने लगे. फ्रैंड्स के साथ ‘ट्रोज़न’ नाम से बैंड बनाया. मगर बिड्डू के सपनों की मंजिल कहीं और थी. वे लंदन जाना चाहते थे. थोड़ी सी रकम के साथ मिडल ईस्ट होते हुए यूरोप पहुंचे. रोजी-रोटी के लिए खानसामे का काम भी किया. जैसे ही कुछ रकम हाथ लगी अपना स्टूडियो तैयार कर लिया. इसके बाद यूरोप और फिर एशिया में बिड्डू की सफलता एक इतिहास है.
बिड्डू को क्रेडिट जाता है कि नाइंटीज़ के इंडिया में पॉप म्यूजिक की ‘सेकेंड वेव’ को इंट्रोड्यूस करने का. 1993 में पहला अलबम ‘जॉनी जोकर’ श्वेता शेट्टी के साथ आया तो वह सिर्फ आहट थी. इसके ठीक दो साल बाद ‘मेड इन इंडिया’ की लहर ने सबको भिगो दिया. अलीशा चिनॉय के इस अलबम से हिन्दी पॉप का सिलसिला जो शुरु हुआ तो आज तक जारी है. अगले ही साल बिड्डू नाजिया-जोहेब की तरह भाई-बहन की जोड़ी शान-सागरिका को नौजवान में लेकर आए और उन्हें शोहरत का रास्ता दिखाया.
सेवेंटीज़ का एक और नाम है, जिसका कांट्रीब्यूशन को भूला नहीं जा सकता, वह है ऊषा उत्थुप. दक्षिण भारतीय ब्राह्णण परिवार में जन्मी इस लड़की का बचपन किशोरी अमोनकर और रॉक म्यूजिक सुनकर बीता. पहला मौका रेडियो सिलोन पर गाने कि मिला और देखते-देखते साड़ी और गजरे में सजी यह लड़की पूरे भारत क्लबों और होटल्स में छा गई.
यह तो बात हुई पॉप की, शुरु के दौर में जैज़ संगीत में भारत का नाम रोशन किया, दार्जिलिंग में जन्मे लुई बैंक्स ने. लुई बैंक्स बड़े हुए तो काठमांडू जाकर पिता के म्यूजिकल बैंड से जुड़ गए. उसी दौर में आरडी बर्मन का साथ काम करने का ऑफर ठुकराया, हालांकि बाद में लुई बैंक्स ने अपने संगीत का जादू ‘मिले सुर मेरा-तुम्हारा’ और ‘देश राग’ से पूरे इंडिया में बिखेरा. जैज के बाद इंडिया को फ्यूज़न से परिचित कराने वाला बड़ा नाम रेमो फर्नांडीस का है. गोआनी और पोर्तगीज़ म्यूजिक से शुरु हुए रेमो के संगीत में देखते-देखते मॉरिशस, अफ्रीका, क्यूबा, निकारागुआ और जमाइका का फोक म्यूजिक भी शामिल हो गया. रेमो उस वक्त वेस्टर्न म्यूजिक में चल रहे एक्सपेरिमेंट्स को समझ रहे थे और अपनी ओरिजिन स्टाइल डेवलप की.
इंडिया में म्यूजिक अलबम पॉपुलर होने के साथ-साथ कुछ और नाम चमके और गायब हो गए, मगर उन्हें भुलाया नहीं जा सकता. इनमें ‘अपाची इंडियन’ के नाम से पॉपुलर स्टीवेन कपूर को याद कर सकते हैं. इंग्लैंड के छोटे से शहर में पले-बढ़े स्टीवेन रैगे और भांगड़ा के रिमिक्स से इंडिया और वेस्ट में पॉपुलर हुए. कुछ-कुछ उनकी तर्ज पर लखनऊ के बाबा सहगल ने इंडिया में रैप म्यूजिक को पॉपुलर बनाया. बर्मिंघम में पले-बढ़े बलजीत सिंह सागू उर्फ बल्ली सागू ने एक कदम आगे बढ़कर ‘बॉलीवुड फ्लैशबैक’ और ‘राइज़िंग फ्राम द ईस्ट’ से रेट्रो म्यूजिक इंट्रोड्यूस रखा.
कई नाम तेजी से उभरे, पॉपुलर हुए और अचानक गायब भी हो गए. मगर सबके साथ एक बात कॉमन है, वे अपने पीछे एक नई धारा छोड़ गए. ऐसी धारा जिसमें शायद कई जागी हुई रातों की थकान और ख्वाब मौजूद हैं. उन्होंने मार्डन इंडियन म्यूज़िक की बुनियाद रखी.
