वरदराजन मुदलियार (1926-1988)
सन 1960 में विक्टोरिया टर्मिनल स्टेशन पर एक पोर्टर के तौर पर जिंदगी शुरु करने वाला वरदराजन मनीस्वामी मुदलियार देखते-देखते मुंबई अंडरवर्ल्ड का एक बड़ा नाम हो गया. कांट्रेक्ट किलिंग, स्मगलिंग और डाकयार्ड से माल साफ करना वरदराजन का मुख्य धंधा था. मुंबई में मटका के धंधे में भी मुदलियार ने एक लंबा-चौड़ा नेटवर्क खड़ा कर दिया था. 1987 में जब मणि रत्नम ने वरदराजन के जीवन पर आधारित फिल्म नायगन बनाई तो वह कमल हासन के अभिनय के चलते एक अविस्मरणीय फिल्म बन गई. बाद में फिरोज खान ने हिन्दी में दयावान के नाम से उसका रिमेक बनाया.देविंदर उर्फ बंटी चोर (1993)
देविंदर सिंह उर्फ सुपरचोर बंटी पर आधारित फिल्म ओए लक्की, लक्की ओए फिल्म आई. असल जिंदगी के चोर बंटी पर गिरफ्तारी के बाद चोरी के 60 मामलों का मुकदमा चला. वैसे पुलिस का दावा था कि वह ढाई सौ से ज्यादा चोरी के मामलों में शामिल है. उलकी के चोरी करने की फिल्मी स्टाइल का रिकार्ड पुलिस के पास भी है, जब सारा माल साफ करने के बाद बंटी का सामना चौकीदार से हो गया, उसने ड्यूटी पर सोने के लिए चौकीदार को फटकारा, दोबारा घर के भीतर गया, कुछ छूटा रह गया सामान लेकर बाहर आया और मकान मालिक की गाड़ी पर चौकीदार के सामने बैठकर फरार हो गया.
नानावती केस (1959)
सन 1959 में नानावती केस भी फिल्मकारों की दिलचस्पी का टॉपिक बना. इंडियन नेवी में कमांडर केएम नानावती ने एंग्लो-इंडियन वाइफ सिल्विया का अपने ही बिजनेसमैन दोस्त प्रेम आहूजा से अफेयर पता लगने पर आहूजा को गोली मार दी और अपने अफसरों को सूचित कर दिया. उनकी सलाह पर डिप्टी कमिश्नर आफ पुलिस के पास जाकर आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया. बाद में एक लंबा मुकदमा चला. तीन साल की सजा के बाद बड़े नाटकीय घटनाक्रम में नानवती को माफी मिल गई और वह अपनी पत्नी-बच्चों के साथ विदेश चला गया. इस केस पर आधारित पहली फिल्म 1963 में बनी ये रास्ते हैं प्यार के, नानावती के रोल में दिखे सुनीलदत्त और सिल्विया बनीं लीला नायडू. इसी घटना की झलक अस्सी के दशक में आई गुलजार की फिल्म अचानक मे भी दिखती है.
जोशी-अभ्यंकर सीरियल मर्डर (1976-77)
राजेंद्र, दिलीप, शांताराम और मुनव्वर अभिनव कला महाविद्यालय में कॉमर्शियल आर्ट के स्टूडेंट थे. उन्होंने एक साल के भीतर दस क्रूर हत्या और लूटपाट की घटनाओं को अंजाम दिया. गिरफ्तारी के बाद उनका मुकदमा हाईकोर्ट और सुप्रीम कोर्ट तक गया. उन्होंने राष्ट्रपति से माफी की अपील की जिसे ठुकरा दिया गया और 27 नवंबर 1983 को चारो को फांसी पर लटका दिया गया. इस घटना से सीधे प्रभावित मराठी की फिल्म आई माफीचा साक्षीदार, जो नाना पाटेकर के शुरुआती दौर की फिल्म है, यह फिल्म हिंसा कारण काफी विवादित हुई और लंबे समय तक सेंसर में अटकी रही. बाद में इसका हिन्दी में डब वर्जन फांसी का फंदा के नाम से आय़ा. अनुराग कश्यप की फिल्म पांच भी काफी हद तक इस घटना से प्रभावित थी, इसे भी सेंसर ने रोक दिया.
